Helpful Gadget of the Week: These PoE splitters energy non-PoE gadgets

I am all in PoE. It's incredibly useful and the combination of our UniFi switch with the ability to run Cat6a in the house has given us a lot of flexibility for the future.

It's also a good thing because I forgot to put a power socket next to the entry point for our BT line. As soon as we receive FTTP, we need power there, but can use PoE instead when the time comes.

What is a PoE splitter?

PoE splitters can help reduce cable problems by upgrading a non-PoE device for use with a PoE switch or injector. These include, for example, IP cameras, wireless access points, VoIP telephones, etc. Another advantage of this setup is the ability to restart your electronics from your PoE-managed switch by switching the port off and on again.

Here are some PoE splitters with different functions and prices that should be considered for your own projects.

The DSLRKIT Active PoE Splitter is 802.3af compatible and is split into a micro USB connector (5 V), which is compatible with many domestic IP cameras. It is also ideal for remote control of a Raspberry Pi. The best thing is the price.

This TP-LINK Gigabit Ethernet PoE Splitter Adapter (TL-PoE10R) is another affordable option from a well-known brand that has also been recognized as an Amazon Choice product. It is compatible with 802.3af and can deliver up to 10 W at 5 VDC, 9 W at 9 VDC or 12 W at 12 VDC with its switchable output.

This Ipolex Active PoE splitter is a 10/100 option, but since it's available in a pack of 2 at this price, it's worth a look if you don't need Gigabit Ethernet. It is 802.3af compatible and can deliver an output power of 12 V / 1 A and 15.4 W.

The BeMatik PoE to USB Splitter can convert your 802.3af PoE into a block terminal format into a 12VDC / 1A output, but also into a 5VDC / 2A output in USB A sockets. It comes with 2 x USB to 3.5mm DC to DC adapter cables.

If you need one, you can find the currently best-selling PoE switches from Amazons here.
