Check: TP-Hyperlink Kasa Sensible WiFi energy strip with USB

The UK version of this popular TP-Link smart device was recently released here and we were eager to try it out.

The KP303 is a power strip with 3 individually addressable power sockets (maximum total load 13 amps) and 2 always on USB charging ports (total 2.4 amps).

It is also surge-protected (level T3) and therefore offers some protective measures for sensitive electronics against mains peaks. With the integrated 2.4 GHz 802.11b / g / n WLAN, no proprietary hubs are required, just your normal WLAN router.

With a size of 26 x 6.4 x 3.9 cm and a few curves more than your normal or garden 3-speed extension, it is clear that a little more thought and design have gone into this device. On the back there are practical screw holes for wall mounting, for both vertical and horizontal alignment.

Setup is quick and easy with the Kasa app. While each socket has its own local switch and a corresponding status indicator (LEDs can be deactivated in the settings), the real interest is to use the socket strip for some home automation systems.

Schedules, timers and voice control

With the Kasa app (Android and iOS) you can name each device and give it a symbol.

You can then set schedules (including those based on Sunrise and Sunset for your location) and timers for lights and devices connected to the electrical outlets.

Other screens include the absence mode to mimic house occupancy and the runtime counter that monitors the time each connected device was used (although not the energy consumed).

The Smart Sockets can be included in groups and scenes in the Kasa ecosystem, and you can also control your devices with your voice (via Alexa and the Google Assistant).

I used our Google / Nest Home Hub to test the device. It works well and responds quickly. "Hey Google, turn on the bedroom light." You can hear the relays clicking while they are working, but it is by no means loud.

You can also integrate other smart home components via IFTTT and Samsung SmartThings.

After a few weeks at my bed, the KP303 turned out to be quick and reliable. The high-quality price-performance ratio is a high-quality extension cable with three intelligent sockets and a 2-port USB charger in a contemporary design from a well-known brand.

The TP-Link KP303 Kasa Smart WiFi power strip is currently an Amazon Choice product.
